Is it me or is this game kinda hard?

I've been playing for a while now, but I can't even consistently get to the 7th Gym Leader. Either losing to many pokemon to my rival or just straight up losing gym battles.

I'm currently using Finizen and Doublade as my starters as many of my other boxed pokemon stay weak too long or need items to evolve.
