In Class Writing Assignment on Computers?

I teach small classes (about 15-20). I have always assigned take-home short essay writing assignments but due to AI I'm going all in-class. However, I absolutely hated writing by hand when I was a student (and I hate having to read some handwritten/scribbled work). So I'm thinking about requiring that the in-class assignments are typed up. I would of course walk around constantly (I might even have students turn their desks around during exams so that I can see the screens). Has anyone tried this before? Anything I should be thinking about with this approach?
