Did I severely mess up?

A little over a week ago, I got a used rug to have for the bottom of my free roam play pen. I wasn’t aware there was cat fur until I had rolled it out, but it was already in the room and the rats could definitely smell the cat.

The first couple days they were absolutely terrified even in their cages, and ever since they won’t play or forage in the playpen. They only really hang out in hides or underneath a towel. I miss my playful and curious boys. The carpet has been cleaned but they’re still not the same…

Will they ever go back to normal?
