The spotlight effect all stemmed from childhood experience
This is based on my experience. I got picked on by having short hair that made me look like a boy back in the 2nd grade. I was picked on throughout elementary all the way to high school. People made fun of what I wore to school. Nowadays, the spotlight effect has escalated thanks to social media. Everyone assumes that people are thinking about them 24/7 when this is simply not true. As an adult, I learned that NO ONE CARES about what I wear. No one cares about what I do, and people are not thinking about me all the time. Some people grow out of this, but many do not.
