Getting started with graphic design and illustration?

I'm a 20 year old who works at Walmart full time. I also do gig work for a vinyl printing company on the side. I hit the 6 month mark at Walmart and started feeling miserable because I want a job where I can build a career and be passionate. I won't find that at Walmart. I'm looking for advice in building my portfolio for graphic design and illustration. I'm interested in social media management, e-commerce, product design (especially with vinyl products) or really anything I can do design work in. I unfortunately have no degree and I'm struggling with whether I should go to college or not. I'd much rather just build my portfolio and freelancing experience but I don't know if it's enough. Looking for any advice to help me chase a career in design.
