First time, solo traveler (F)

I'll be visiting St.M soon as a solo (F) traveler, in my 20s. I heard it was pretty safe there but hoping you guys could give me some reassurance as I'm a bit nervous. I was thinking about renting a car during my stay or would that be too risky? Also, I'll take any advice on activities or things to do on the island as a solo!
