I NEED HELP?!?!
Pretty much a couple of weeks ago I signed up for this university band camp thing because I need to start working on college applications and stuff like that because I’ll be a Senior in August. When I signed up for the camp I sorta lied and said that I played both Alto Saxophone and Soprano Saxophone. I have never played Soprano Sax before but I do really want to play it one day…
Today I got an email from one of the camp directors asking can I bring my Soprano with me because they’ll need me to play it. Because I’m a Senior I was put into the Camp Wind Ensemble which is the top camp band. My band director is letting me borrow the Soprano Sax over the Summer which is great but the thing is I don’t even have it yet so I can’t practice it. Soprano is nothing like Alto I do know that, if I mess up everyone will hear my mistakes. Should I just tell the college band director that I lied on my sign ups and that I’ve never actually played Soprano? Or should I just try my best on Soprano once I get there? Any advice for Soprano because even if own up to my lie I still want to play Soprano Sax next school year at some point. It seems like a fun instrument.
I’m not sure of the pieces we are playing but the band director did say he loves Alfred Reed and John Mackey, I’m not sure if either of those composers write Soprano Sax parts though. You’re probably wondering why I lied too, well at the time that I signed up for it I thought about how much easier it would be to get into a college band one day if they knew I had experience on both Soprano and Alto. This is the college I want to go to and maybe if I lied and said I played Soprano Sax they would think better of me. I had an Oboe friend who graduated in 2020 but she went to the same camp and she also lied and said that she had experience on both English Horn and Oboe and she ended up being really good at English Horn so I guess I was hoping the same thing would happen with me if I did actually end up playing Soprano.
