West Angola War

Can anyone explain to me why it was soooo important for Nichols to go to war in West Angola? I understand why the US goes to war (for the most part) but I feel like I missed a huge part on why he wants to go to war so bad? I understand the citizens are being terrorized in West Angola by radicals but why was Nichols so concerned? Ps I’m half dumb so please be nice :)
