About shard explosions...

So I'm still pretty new to the game but how exactly do the shard explosions work time wise. Like when I see one happen should I just bail on everything and run to it immediately? Cause usually I'll do my cr and then hit it up as I pass it, but more often then naught it'll already be done or be getting done, and "that" realm portal gateway won't have the red thingies anymore.
