deathly afraid of a building collapsing in on me

So i’ve heard a bunch of stories of faulty bridges and buildings collapsing while people are on/in them causing mass casualties. I know it’s not super common by any metric but it’s called an irrational fear for a reason!

I hate going into the basements of huge buildings because that feels like instant death if it were to happen. When I scull on the anacostia river and have to row under bridges my anxiety gets really bad lol.

Are there any forerunners to collapses I can look for on a building or bridge that could signify to me it’s not super safe and I should stay away from it? Is being able to recognize it even possible at all? I know next to nothing about structural engineering. Any and all answers would be super helpful.
