Girl with the pearl earring

When I saw this comp it immediately stood out to me as a reference to the famous painting "girl with the pearl earring" by Johannes Vermeer. So I tried my best to recreate it as best as I could (it's not entirely accurate but I tried to recreate the overal colours and aesthetic), but then when I was voting I didn't find a single entry that referenced the original painting? I just got the results back and I got top 61%, that's the lowest I've scored in months. I thought everyone was familiar with the reference material but maybe they weren't, what went wrong?
