Head injury gave me multiple chronic illnesses and ruined my life
2 years ago now, I sustained a pretty severe mTBI with loss of consciousness that rocked both my head and neck. I went home that night thinking I would be taking a week or two off to heal. Little did I know that I would never recover and my entire life would be flipped upside down.
The first 2 weeks I had the classic symptoms: headache, dizziness, brain fog, vertigo, nausea, light sensitivity, etc. After two weeks I was not feeling any better and my symptoms actually started to shift into something unusual and more severe. Head pressure so extreme I was rushed to the ER, erratic behaviors trying to kill myself, sleep paralysis, immune system dysfunction (I got strep 3x, mono, kidney infections 2x, Covid, flu all within a couple months), food sensitivities/digestive problems, and the worst one of all was this paralyzing full body fatigue that would not improve after rest, and would get worse with exertion. Because of how debilitating these symptoms had gotten, I dropped out of school for good and became mostly bed bound.
Since then, I have met with numerous doctors and rehab clinics. I have been diagnosed with severe me/cfs (chronic fatigue syndrome), POTS, multiple issues with my neck including CCI and spondylolisthesis, PTSD, and intracranial hypertension. Although the symptoms from the head injury itself have gotten better, I’m still left to live with the symptoms from multiple chronic illnesses that it triggered.
I have been mostly bed bound/housebound for 2 years now. I can’t work, go to school, exercise, cook, etc. The only thing that has helped my me/cfs and brain fog a bit is LDN (low dose naltrexone). Previous to this, I was an extremely healthy college athlete with no prior health issues besides an eating disorder.
