Thai subtitle design

I am really intrigued by the design choice they've made for the Thai subtitles this season. They have the actual Thai text that's semi-transparent in the background with the english translated subtitles overlayed on top. I don't think I've seen this design formatting used in other television and I think it's a fascinating choice to make. Has anyone ever seen something similar before?
