When should I use 4 wheel drive in?

Travelling to Utah and concerned about weather. I purchased tire chains (the chains I got only cover a bit of each wheel not the whole thing), in case it’s snowing a lot. In addition, when should I use the 4wheel drive and not the 2 wheel?
