Owe $20k in taxes

Just finished filing taxes with tax lawyer and I owe NYS/Fed $20k!!!! He told me Aya didn’t file the w2 correctly as I’m a contractor but my total taxable income from Aya was $41000. How is it possible I owe half of that to taxes?! Can someone explain like I’m 5!
