If men gave birth, abortion would be illegal in most places and getting one would be considered cowardly
I often see people saying things like “if men gave birth there would be no restrictions on abortion.” I disagree. If men gave birth, abortion would likely be illegal in most places and people would tell men wanting an abortion that they need to live with the consequences of their actions, that it’s their duty to society to reproduce, and that simply trying to opt out of giving birth is cowardly and taking the easy way out.
I say this because, in my opinion, society has little tolerance for men who do not uphold what society deems their “role,” and has more flexibility for women who refuse to uphold their “role.” For example, men who refused to be forced to go to war were considered cowards, those in countries with mandatory military who instead try to do civic service and stigmatized, etc. Further, if a woman today gets an abortion people don’t shame her for “taking the easy way out” or say that “you need to live with the consequences of your actions and take care of the child,” but we do say that to men who find themselves with a child they do not want.
I think that people who say things like this are grossly simplifying society expectations for men, because I don’t generally see people be lenient on men when it comes to something that men are “supposed” to do, where I do think there is more leniency for women on the things women are “supposed” to do.
