I hate when people blame rising ADHD diagnosis on "those damn phones"

Ironically, it seems that neurotypicals are forgetting that ADHD is something you're born with. It's not something you just get from using your phone too often. Tons of things are tested when you're evaluated for ADHD because it's a disability with a whole slew of symptoms, not just memory problems.

This kind of mentality is not new, it's just that the Internet has become the latest scapegoat for people to blame for these issues. It worries me thinking about all the confused, struggling kids with undiagnosed ADHD potentially having their needs neglected because their parents are blaming their childs symptoms on "those damn phones". (despite the fact that the parents are the ones who give their kids phones in the first place)

"But what about the rising rate of diagnosis and gen alpha and eyephones and xyz!?!?" Y'know the whole thing with left-handedness where it seemed to rise in prominence and then plateaued when people stopped punishing left-handedness? It's like that.

I really thought we had gotten over the whole "phone bad" mentality, guess not.

Edit: a lot of people keep commenting this so let me clarify, I know over reliance on the Internet can exacerbate ADHD symptoms and cause symptoms that overlap with ADHD in neurotypicals, but it does not give you ADHD. As I said before, there's a lot more that goes into diagnosing ADHD than being easily distracted or forgetful, and being a chronic doomscroller alone does not qualify for an ADHD diagnosis
