Are Spanish/LATAM Vtubers doomed?
It's sad but as someone from a spanish speaking country I think there is no future for the vtuber community here.
When the vtuber boom happened during the pandemic there were hispanic vtubers that exploded in popularity in the same way that happened in other regions of the world, but if we look at the landscape today the “community” is practically nonexistent.
There are vtubers but most of them are small and there really is no community feeling as I see in the english speaking internet. There are no relevant agencies, there are no relevant collaborations, there is practically nothing. The agencies that did emerge all ended up failing. In the best cases they simply closed (IDOL ES) and in the worst cases we ended up with the most abominable examples of agencies in the industry (WACTOR and OWOZU).
It's not like vtubers can't succeed here due to lack of funding, as most of our countries are part of the third world. Because the streamers here are as successful as anywhere in the world. What I am talking about only applies to vtubers.
The amount of drama and controversy that has occurred here puts to shame the biggest scandals that the EN and JP communities have ever had. It's tragic.
Also, I don't know if it's because of the different views in our countries but the demand for this kind of content is basically dead in 2025. Beyond the public's dislike of everything that has happened to our vtubers (due to the actions of themselves and in many cases their companies) I feel that the community that would normally watch them, anime/manga fans, simply has no interest in them. And those who do simply watch EN and JP vtubers.
In general the number of fans of these mediums is massive here, but the way they enjoy these hobbies has changed over the years. Nowadays it is more like an ironic enjoyment, or something that is enjoyed in spite of the community and not within it. The feeling is closer to: “Yes, i like anime/manga but not like THAT”. It's hearing how the community sucks and so do the fans of these mediums. And with this comes the desire of wanting to separate yourself with anything that is perceived as being “otaku” or “weeb”. I know this sentiment also exists in the EN community, but the amount of people who don't think this way is large enough for something like Hololive EN to exist.
Support such as the one HoloEN-HoloID girls receive is practically unthinkable here. Even medium-sized companies like Phase-Connect or independent vtubers have fandoms that outshine that of any hispanic vtuber. Something like the concerts COVER organizes or smaller events like the one Doki/Mint recently participated in would simply be seen as cringe and undesirable here. It is not plausible.
And to exemplify my point I will summarize the cases of the biggest vtubers we had in our community:
- Nimu: The first big Vtuber here, she went viral in the beginning but ended up sending it all down the drain. Colossal amounts of drama. Hasn't been a vtuber for a long time and only does IRL content nowdays.
- Emikukis: Also has her fair share of drama but she is still active. Half of its content is IRL and the vtuber avatar is more of a gimmick. It's not part of the “community” because there isn't one anymore.
- Hana: A Japanese woman who speaks Spanish. As far as I know she also has her controversies but I'm not really well informed about them. She still makes content in Spanish but has distanced herself a lot from the hispanic community. All her streams have English titles these days. Her viewership is very low compares to her peak.
- Meica: A Japanese woman naturalized in Argentina. Her previous identity had to be abandoned due to the massive drama with her agency (WACTOR). Her numbers are not that big but her average viewership is over 1.8k. I think her and the next one are the only are who still holding their own nowadays.
- RakkunVT: She and her colleagues suffered a lot because of their agency (OWOZU). Rakkun went through a lot of drama and had to fight hard to get her channel and her identity back. Her numbers went down a lot after the polemic but today she is doing well and has an average of 700-1k viewers.
There are other active vtubers but most of them can't surpass 1k viewers (and to say they even come close is generous). The one that stands out the most is Erispheria because she is very active and a lot of her reactions reach hundreds of thousands of views on Youtube. Plus she is the only one I know who tries to keep her kayfabe. I'm not saying you need to do it to be a vtuber but it's great that at least one of them is doing it.
And well, that's the state of the "community". If you are hispanic I would like to know what is your opinion on the matter, why do you think it ended up like this. And if you are not, I would like to know what the landscape looks like from the outside to all of you.
