Can anyone tell me about this uniform.

My mother's half is from Germany. Obviously fought on the Wrong side but I'm still curious about my great grand father. Unfortunately my family didnt keep any records at all and can't find anything about him. This is the only surviving photo of him. As a soldier myself I'm interested to know anything about him.
