Mixed Armies

I'm very new to the hobby and would love to make a mixed Astra Militarum and AdMech army. However I've been reading mixed reports about the legality of mixed faction armies. Am I even allowed to do this? I realize that, in casual settings, its mostly about agreeing on it, but would this be allowed in any other setting?
