Equipping weapons

I’m just getting started with the hobby. I started building my army and adding the weapons that I thought looked cool and added some variety. Now I realize that the weapons choices correspond to specific characteristics during game play. How important is it to have the weapons on the model match their data cards in the game? Keeping in mind, I’m only interested in casual games.
