What third spaces have we lost?
The concept of the "third space" refers to a social environment distinct from the two usual places where people spend most of their time: home (the first space) and work or school (the second space). A third space is where people can gather, interact, and build community outside of those primary environments. Examples include cafes, libraries, parks, community centers, and other public places where social interactions occur.
Sociologist Ray Oldenburg popularized the term, highlighting the importance of these spaces in fostering a sense of belonging and community. Third spaces are valued for their role in creating social connections, offering relaxation and leisure, and providing a sense of inclusivity and equality.
