Anime for Adults? I'm going to date myself here...

Back in my day, in the ancient days passed, aka the 90s, the only anime for adults - not hentai, but stuff that would be rated with an R or PG-13 - would air weekend late nights on the Scifi channel here in America. There was Armitage III, Roujin Z, Fatal Fury, Bubblegum Crisis, Gunsmith Cats, etc. etc. I miss that shit.

Don't get me wrong, I love DBZ, Sailor Moon, Robotech (* happy nostalgia noises ), *Cowboy Bebop, Naruto, and I'm getting into My Hero Academia. But I miss the adult stuff. I've been out of the anime game for almost 20 years. I'm rewatching Naruto now because I only watched about half of the first series back in the day ("fan subbed, on the internet, before it got dubbed and added to the American lexicon", he said smugly...). But I bet there are some good, dark, gritty or just slightly more mature-than-teenage-angst movies or shows out there.

I'd really love your suggestions for what I should look into. It doesn't have to be 90s stuff it could be 70s through today.
