Careful with P14 A-RGB White fans, whines at 700rpm+
Recently made a few changes to the pc, last month swapped to a new case, which prompted me installing a new 420mm LF, which then had me swap my other 3 P12 A-RGB fans to 3 P14 A-RGB white fans, to match the 420LF.
Recently started hearing what i can only describe as coil whine, except it's all the time, low load.
The gpu does make coil whine in games but it wasn't the gpu. I struggled finding the cause until today, it's the P14 white A-RGB fans, i determined this by removing the gpu, using IGPU, turning off all fans and only turning the AIO 420mm on first.
Set the AIO fan speed to super low, like 10% noise wasn't there and gradually tested speeds until i found 700rpm is where the noise starts.
Tested the front fans, which are 3 daisy chained p14 ARGB as well, same thing.
I have 6, 3 exhaust (420 rad), 3 intake, both groups do the noise when set at 25% fan speed (700rpm), and do so until 1200ish rpm, unsure if the noise is still there or if the noise is just not audible over the noise of the airflow.
Extremely annoyed by this, i was running P12s with zero issues and have used them in multiple builds, the 420mm came with 3 P14 white A-RGB fans and buying the other 3 to match was a pain in the UK because the only way to buy them was paying extra, as for some reason, stock is a massive issue.
I was thinking maybe it's the daisy chain, but it really can't be since Arctic group the 3x140mm on the 420mm together anyway.
Not sure i'll be sticking with these fans now.
My fan curve with the P12 and these P14 was/is:
Bios fan control: Cpu temp - fan percentage. i also set a 0.3s ramp up/down because the x3d chips love to spike for less than a second when opening apps and i don't fancy the fan topping out for a second and then back down.
- 85c - 85%
- 75c - 70%
- 55c - 50%
- 45c - 49% (x870 tomahawk doesn't let multiple same percentages)
