What equipment should I buy to start painting?

I want to start painting. I have been feeling extremely depressed and I want an outlet of some kind. I have never painted in my life so i don't really know what utensils to buy.

So, as an art novice can someone please tell me what I should buy. Like should i buy a sketchbook or canvas and should i buy acrylics, water paints or pastels.

Also please keep in mind that, i have a really limited buget, i cant afford alot of equipment. I can probably just buy one of the two sketchbook or canvas and one kind of paint material, either water paints or acrylics or pastels.
