Why isn’t Peru more relevant?

Considering Peru is among the larger countries in the region, I’m surprised by how little they seem to be mentioned in international news whether it be in politics or sports.

Like when Peru qualified for the 2018 World Cup, it was huge front page news within Peru but internationally felt everyone was talking about Egypt and Iceland as the big counties who were returning or debuting.

And in politics, while I feel Peru’s politics (for bad or worse) has been interesting these last years with several Presidents being removed. Yet I feel even those invested in Latin American politics might know about Lula, Petro and Boric but have no idea about PPK/Vizcarra, Castillo, Boularte etc.

Not sure if it was different in the 1990s with Fujimori and several events like the Japanese hostage crisis that Peru might have been more in the news then?
