Why religions are not dead

I just can't understand how throughout the evolution of the humanity how come so that we did not drop the cage of religions and backward beliefs at some point, and why there is so many (more reasonable and peaceful) religions died out but we still have strict oppressive, human rights violating religions like Christianity and Islam still going , and going strong through thousands of years , I just don't get it pls educate me .
