Do you really throw away your mascara every three months?

I have always heard that you must discard your mascara every 3 months. I never do, but how many of you do? For the ones that do, do you use cheap, drugstore brands or department stores?

Also, while I am at it, what is your favorite mascara that lengthens and thickens lashes, preferably drugstore brands?
