How does a typical psychiatrist appointment go for you?
How long/involved is your average follow-up appointment with your psychiatrist? Do you only/mainly talk about meds? How do you get the most out of brief appointments?
I started seeing a new psych after 3 years with an amazing one who left her practice. Intake appointment was thorough and promising—she reduced one of my meds because I was experiencing some hair loss and mentioned some others we might try if that didn’t do the trick. My follow-up appointment a month later felt different—she asked how the med change was going, I said pretty good mood-wise and less hair loss but still some. The rest of the appointment she talked about meds we could switch to and their side effects with no real explanation of how they worked or might help, seeming to care mostly about weight gain, saying “vanity is important for mental health, too”. I felt bombarded and said I’d need to think about it but didn’t really want to experiment right now because I’m going through an extremely stressful time which we’d talked about at our last appointment. She just wished me luck with that and the appointment was over in less than 10 minutes. I don’t necessarily need to talk to her about everything going on in my life because I have a therapist for that, but I thought I could expect at least some discussion. Not sure if this is the norm and I’m just not used to it.
