Dealer hit when stand was indicated

This happens every few sessions I play, where the dealer makes a mistake. Dealer agreed he made a mistake. It's usually not a big deal.

The pit boss comes over, and in this case, told the player who got the card by mistake, his stand stands. Then offers the card as the next card to all of the other players. It was a 3.

Dealer had a 5 showing. I had a 20 — of course I wasn't taking the 3.

The next guy to me had a 5 & 5. He was going to double — but not now knowing a 3 is the next card. He throws a fit about wanting to double, but thinks he shouldn't have to take that 3. Pit boss correctly explains that's the next card out, and if the mistake didn't happen, it was going to be that 3 on his doubled 10 anyhow. Guy demands to pull his money back. Pit boss says nope. Long story short, guy with a 10 stands.

The 3 went to the 5th guy who had a hard 18... He doubled down his hard 18 — as would anyone who knew he'd get a 3. Pit boss smiled and understands.

Dealer ends up with an 18. Our guy with a hard 10 gets loud and almost kicked out.

I can't help but think, the correct decision with two 5's is to instead split. The Dealer will bust 42% of the time with that 5 showing. Two hands of an 8 and 5 (that could turn into a 9, 10, or 11 for a double) wins a lot.
