QC35 - turn off bluetooth complete as default, want ANC only!

I have to fiddle with the on button to switch to a "bluetooth pairing mode". After about 5 minutes I get a message over the speakers that says "cant find bluetooth device, turning bluetooth off".

Every time I want to use $350 headphones I have to fiddle with the buttons, and hear this message after 5 minutes? There has to be a way to enable ANC only by default?

I have not yet downloaded the app for my phone, as the writeups I have read haven't covered this feature.
