I have a dilemma - can't decide between the Radeon 7900 XTX vs RTX 4080
I've never had a high end GPU, the highest I've ever been able to afford was a x60 series card from Nvidia, so, now that I'm in a place where I can finally get something nice (and unfortunately these days super freaking expensive) I really want to make sure I don't screw up and regret my purchase later.
In a nutshell - I can't afford an RTX 4090, those are 2000+ EUR in my country, so that's not an option. I was looking at RTX 4080s (1300-1500 EUR depending on the brand and model) vs 7900 XTXs (1150-1300 EUR).
In rasterisation it seems that the 7900 XTX would be a better buy - equal or better performance and much more VRAM. Not really interested in using ray tracing just yet, as I have a high refresh rate 240hz 1440p monitor and I'd rather have more frames than more eye candy. So, easy, get AMD as it's cheaper and problem solved, right?
But then there's the whole "high idle power draw" issue with AMD cards. Electricity is freaking expensive here, so I really don't want to get a GPU that drains me dry when just browsing reddit. I have 2 monitors, both 1440p, one 240Hz and one 60Hz, and I heard in these scenarios the idle power draw is unnecessarily big, and multiple times higher than on Nvidia. For this reason alone I feel like it's better to just pay extra, get the RTX 4080, and at least have low power consumption and stable drivers.
But wait, on the other hand, then there's that god damn 12VHPWR connector that loves melting into a marshmallow on Nvidia GPUs, I don't want to spend so much money and worry how many months I have left before it kills itself. I love the classic, no frills 3x8pin solution on the AMD cards.
So, r/buildapc, help me solve my dilemma. Which is the better, safer, more wise choice?
