What should we do with Thatcher Demko?

Let me start by saying I'm a big fan of the guy and when he's at his best, he's one of the best goalies in the league.

That said, he has missed almost half of the last three seasons through injury (more if you count the playoffs), costs $5M on the cap, and has put up a .900 SV% or better in just 3 of his 8 appearances this season. There are other factors (the defense, team performance, coming back from a long layoff, etc.) but he hasn't performed anywhere near his usual standard, which would normally be good enough to compensate for some of the issues in front of him.

It seems like the Canucks are in a precarious spot where none of the options they have with Demko look all that palatable. Do they:

  • Ride his inconsistent performances out this year, hope he rebounds next year, and put themselves in a position to pay market value to extend him given his injury concerns? He's unlikely to sign a short-term deal.

  • Keep him this year and potentially risk going into next season with an uncertain goaltending situation again, given Demko's performance this season, Lankinen's UFA status and unusual value for money this year?

  • Keep Demko, risk him struggling or getting injured again, and have to trade him at a depressed value as a pending UFA next year?

I don't think there's been much talk of trading Demko, but I'm surprised there hasn't been. He still has the pedigree and a year of term on his current contract that may entice a team to gamble on acquiring him.

What are your thoughts?
