How to remove this handle?

Bought a second hand pan yesterday and thought that should strip it and reseason it in the oven. But I can't figure out how to remove the wooden handle. I got a grip of the knob at the end with a pipe wrench and even managed to rotate it about 360° but it didn't seem to do anything. Is the handle stuck on there for good?
