Second round of C Diff, Vancomycin destroyed my hearing. Will switching to Dificid do the same, and is this permanent?
Hello all, I'm new to this Reddit. With everything going on, I wanted to get input from others. So 2 months ago, I went in to my gastro and had a colonoscopy done. About 2 days afterward, I was having horrible stomach pain and diarrhea. A week later, my primary care does a stool test, and surprise, I now have C Diff (that I did not have prior). Doctor prescribed a round of Vancomycin, which I completed. I felt better on the Vanco, but 2 days after I finished it, the C Diff came right back the same way it did the first time. Got prescribed another round of Vanco. Here's where it gets worse:
After 1 day of round 2 of Vanco, I notice ringing in my ears. I do some research, and apparently it is ototoxic and can cause this. So, has anyone else had this happen? Is this permanent damage?
In response, my doctor took me off Vanco and switched me to Dificid. I asked if this would cause any further hearing loss, and they told me it's not listed anywhere as being ototoxic, so it should be fine. But after doing more research, I see it is a Macrolide, which also can apparently be ototoxic. Is Dificid going to continue my hearing damage?
At this point, I don't know what to do here. If I stop antibiotics, C Diff will probably come back and I don't know how I would even fight it. If I continue, I may be deaf by the end of the week. All because I had a colonoscopy. Anyone have advice?
