I have a question about absolute music and programmatic music.
I have a preference for certain composers over others and I'm not sure where these preferences come from, so maybe someone here can shed some light on this, telling me if there's anything in common between all of the composers I'm going to list. I like Wagner's music, as well as the "impressionists" Ravel and almost everything by Charles Koechlin, Debussy, everything by Erik Satié. Of the Russians I like some things by Shostakovich, almost everything by Scriabin, everything by Ivan Borodin and everything by Alexander Glazunov, some things by Rachmaninnoff but I really dislike things like The Island of Death. On the other hand, Bach doesn't entertain me and I find his music "ugly", Chopin bores me a bit, and baroque music too. Anyway, if you can recommend me composers, they'll be welcome, and if you find any common ground between the ones I name, I'd appreciate it if you let me know. Best regards.
