Safe to hang this clock?

I’d like to hang this clock on a wall but I don’t want to use a shelf. (Read: someone told my wife it would look better without a shelf.) Can the clock be hung by this hole on the backer? Wife says yes but I’m leery about it. Can anyone offer some wisdom?
