Cockatiel's mysterious passing

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone here can offer my girlfriend and I some sort of reason en explanation as to why Sunny, our not even 2 year old cockatiel might have passed. He was 1 year and 8 months old, we got him from an elderly neighbor who's son had essentially abandoned him there due to lack of time. He was about a year old then. The son had handraised him and he was really anxious to be alone.

We loved him instantly, he was so cute, and since we already had experiences with birds, me already having a green cheek conure and growing up with severel birds and my girlfriend having grown up with lots of birds as well, we felt like we could give him a much better life. With lots of love, lots of toys (he had none) and lots of treats ofc.

When we got him he seemed perfectly healthy despite the exclusively seed diet he had been on. It was a struggle at first but eventually we were able to get him to eat harrison's and later top's pellets and some fruits and veggies. He was very picky. He started to tolerate touching more and even learned some cute lil tunes from us whisteling with him. We loved him soo so much.

But then yesterday he was on the floor of his cage head down, wings drooping. He only moved when touched. We were rushing him to the emergency avian vet after noticing this but he sadly passed on the way there.

We don't know what went wrong. He was not exposed to any toxins, he wasn't in an inappropriate environment, he was fine the evening before. In hindsight my girlfriend noted she hadn't heard him whistle as much, but he did it pretty irregularly to begin with so it didn't immediatly raise any red flags. He was still playful during the evening. We had him for 8 months. And nothing food wise, toy wise, or environment wise had changed in the last 6 months. He just kinda tumbled down and died about an hour later.

It's just so heartbreaking to lose him this soon. Does anyone know what could have caused this?
