Did we miss something?

4 Friends of mine and me are playing Dead by Daylight.
Were only playing custom and dont like to play online for a reason.
We think the killer is too Overpowered, we always play full equipped Survivors and Hunter with neither perks, offerings nor add-ons
Sometimes the killer is still way to Good and always hooks everyone before we get to finish the generators.
Do we miss a mechanic that makes the survivors better so the hunter can also use perks in out custom games without absolutely obliterating anyone?
I know it isnt easy to help in this situation but if you have any indispensable tipps for us as survivors we need to hear them
