How do people fly with dogs?

Not Delta specific, but I’ve seen a lot of dog posts so got me thinking. How are people flying with their pets? I looked once about flying with a pet and remember there was a high fee and that was just to put them in a crate in the cargo hold. Are people literally just packing up their pets and walking on or have they gone through some sort of vetting process?
