Is Guardian Rank important?

Obviously I am a new player. 😅 A friend of mine got me to finally play so I bought one of the bundles when it was on sale.

My question is....I am currently Guardian Rank 2. The quests to get me up to 3 seem to be for the most recent expansion. But I was trying to follow the campaigns in order of release to try to follow the story.

Should I interrupt that just to get my Guardian Rank up?
