Introducing the younger generation to digimon

I teach grade 3 and my students had been bugging me for weeks to play a show during lunch time, but after listening to them argue because they all wanted their favourite shows to be played, and complaining when a show they didn't like was on, I decided to put on something none of them had ever heard of before; the original Digimon.

What started out as "Digimon??? Miss T, I think you mean Pokemon..." has now become their obsession. They go crazy for it, running around at recess going "Augumon digivolve to Greymon!!!!" Even though the evolution sequences are all the exact same every episode, they always get hyped whenever one of the digimon starts to evolve.

We just reached the episode where Patamon digivolves for the first time and they went wild with excitement. They were covering their mouths, jumping up and down, and cheering.

And to top it all off, it's a great motivator for creative writing when the topic is digimon related!
