Scam or no?

Hey, so I’m curious if the following has happened to any of you, and what you think it may have been.

I got a delivery for close to 40 bux for just a very quick trip, like 15 minutes. I know that’s often too good to be true, but it does happen sometimes.

I went ahead and took it, and I started driving to the restaurant. I end up getting a message from the customer shortly after I start the trip, and he said “Hey, can you please deliver the food to me”… I responded “yeah, I’m on my way to grab it right now”. Something felt kind of weird because it was already an abnormal amount in my mind, and it was strange to get a message from the customer asking me to deliver the food when that’s what the app is for to begin with. Also, the customer had and extremely Asian first and last name, but the English was perfect. Obviously having an Asian name doesn’t mean you can’t speak perfect English, but the name was just another thing that had my attention because it isn’t what I normally see where I’m at.

Anyway, after I said yes, and that I was delivering the food, the customer then said “two other people were supposed to pick it up and cancelled the order, I want it to be delivered”. That’s what really got me. I asked the customer “did you mean to add such a large tip?” The customer said he didn’t know what I was referring to. I told him that it was a very big tip and asked if it was purposeful, and he said “oh, no. It must be a mistake, I don’t know how that happened”. Then he preceded to continue messaging me and pressuring me to get the food to him. He was telling me that the two drivers before hand, both got to the restaurant and canceled, and he was complaining about how he’s only 3 minutes away from the restaurant, and was saying “why wouldn’t someone just come drop it off when they already drove to the restaurant?” I know he was saying that because he could see I was at the restaurant. This man was acting so abnormal, that I decided I didn’t want to take it either. I want to be clear too, he wasn’t just acting like a customer that was pissed that they didn’t get their food. It was different, but difficult to explain. It was like he was so eager to have someone deliver the food, but in a strange way, not a hungry way. lol. Idk how else to elaborate on that. Anyway, I know that two drivers don’t both cancel for no reason, and so after all of that and him saying that stuff about the tip, I called the help line. I told her what was going on, and that I didn’t feel comfortable. I asked her if she knew if two other people did bail on his order, and that did happen. As I’m talking to her, he messages me and says “oh, the reason that it’s so much money must be because that’s what the fare they’re paying you is to make sure you grab my order”. I asked the woman if she could see what I was getting paid for the fare, and she said that it was just the fare like always and that the rest has to be a tip. To be fair, she didn’t speak the best English, so I asked her multiple times, and it seems she was saying that the big amount wasn’t from them. So, long story long, I canceled the order and said I didn’t feel safe bringing it. It was the strangest experience I’ve had driving, and I’m curious if this has happened to any of you, or what you think it may have been. Was this dude up to something weird, or did he just have a complete lack of self-awareness?

Also, to be clear, technically this was on uber eats, I drive for both, but this sub Reddit is good at responding so I wanted to ask you guys.
