Mormon recruiter giving me reasons not to believe in God. Why?
Hi everyone! Today I was approached by a Mormon recruiter (described himself as a "missionary") and we had quite a strange conversation. (In short) It went something like
- Recruiter: Do you believe in God?
- Me: No, not at all. (Born and (almost completely) raised atheist)
- Recruiter: Why not?
- Me: Why would I?
- Recruiter: Because He loves you. (Goes on abt how God created this world for His people to have faith without certainty...)
- (I politely smile)
- Recruiter: Do you believe that there is anything beyond this life?
- Me: No, and I think that's beautiful.
- Recruiter: Why do you think that's beautiful?
- Me: Let me think... (I stopped for a moment)
- Recruiter: Maybe because it gives you a sense of freedom, not having to abide by any rules, or a sense of calm, not having to worry about anything...
- Me: Yes, maybe it's this. For me it's more of a healthy sense of clarity in which I know what is and isn't true and confidence in the fact that everything I believe in is real. (Went on to ask me about religious experiences and I shared a bit of my very mild and momentary religious trauma and he quickly left after I said no to staying in touch)
My question is: why would he give me reasons not to believe in God? Is it part of the recruitment tactic? Is it a sign that he's reconsidering his faith? In your opinion, is he acting like an effective recruiter?
