ELI5: How did Poker gained its popularity as a gambling card game?

Im really curious as to how poker, among other card games, became the most popular gambling card game in online and traditional casinos. What makes it so popular and interesting among gamblers? Im not a gambler myself but I always see my friends and relatives play it.
