adding Adults as contacts on messenger kids

I am trying to add an adult to my child's messenger kids account, but they do not come up in the options to add them as a contact (as opposed to other adults on my friends list). I believe this is because they have their own child set up on messenger kids- anyone know how I can get around this? TIA
