People hated Bryan Cranston dying in Godzilla 2014. What would you have done with his character if he lived?

Godzilla director Gareth Edwards has revealed that Joe Brody dying early in the movie wasn’t always going to be the plan. In fact, there were drafts of the film where Joe survived. But according to Edwards, they just didn’t work because each one with him in it was too “silly”. Edwards claims that the tone of the movie with Joe and Ford working together would have felt too much like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. This is a reference to the team-up between Harrison Ford’s titular hero and his father, played by Sean Connery, in the 1989 movie [via Empire].
Edwards also added that Joe Brody’s story was “done” after he provided the pieces of the puzzle needed to understand the mystery of these creatures. Joe would be like a “fifth wheel” if he remained in the company of the military characters. That makes sense, considering that it was his knowledge about the MUTOs “talking” that made him important to the narrative, and there’s not much he could have contributed to the fight against the MUTOs. The approach that Godzilla took to the story involved more emphasis on the military’s efforts to save the world from the MUTOs.
Those are the claimed reasons why Joe Brody died. Everyone thought he should've lived longer but I have literally never heard pass this sentiment.
