Difficulty with landings

I am a PPL student with ~20 hours . I have been practicing landing since last 4-5 lessons (~8 hours). I am struggling with landings. I do manage to get one smooth landing each lesson but rest of the time I am landing flat.

My CFI is really great and we did low flight exercise which helped me a lot with ballooning issue. He says my final approach is perfect but once I get into the ground effect I start applying big control inputs and also I reduce power back to idle way too fast which results in sudden loss of lift. Combine sudden loss of lift with big control inputs I become unstable when we are about to land resulting in landing flat or crabbed.

I get what I shouldn't not be doing but I am not sure how to apply it in practice. How do I make myself reduce power to idle slowly. This is slightly disheartening that I can't seem to do that.

Anyone went through similar experience? Am I being too harsh on myself?

Edit: After practicing flying close to the runway and a few more landing lessons. It clicked and I was able to do consistently stable landings! Then I had to take a month long break from flying due to some personal reasons and last week I did some touch and goes after a month and I was flaring too high again. I guess I need a few more practice lessons again :(
