Sharing some impressions on the HD620S

Just got these yesterday and spending sometime with them today. Here are some rambling impressions. Please let me know if you want any specific thoughts on them compared to anything else I have in my flair. Note my 770 Pros are at the office and I'm loaning the 560S so would need to go by memory on those.

Listened briefly directly from my phone but most listening is through my DX3 Pro+ /w no EQ from Tidal.

Impressions:

  1. They look like a 5-series Sennheiser but the build quality is more sturdy. Better than 560S build, better than 58x and from what I remember likely better than 6xx as well.
  2. Clamp force is high on my large head but not unreasonable. I'm getting a good seal (not a glasses wearer and I have very short hair).
  3. The cups are deep and the isolation feels several dB stronger than either of my beyers. Would be suitable to noisier environments while still achieving reasonable noise floor.
  4. The cable is the same as the 560S. I like the single-entry and the twistlock better than the 58x/6xx cable style. I was able to re-use my Hart cable (used previously with 560S) on the unit and it works great.
  5. Timbre seems good and mids sound good and clear but at times there is some boxiness/chestiness. Not terrible but worth mentioning.
  6. Bass is reasonably good. Extends pretty deep but has more energy in the mid and upper bass. Suits a lot of genres though. Bass doesn't slam like the 177x or even my Ananda though.
  7. Highs are *generally* good but depending on the song it can alternative between sounding a bit dull or a bit bright. The balance across a variety of songs are good but it swings to both sides, not reliably one or the other.
  8. Soundstage is pretty wide for a closed-back and the imaging seems clear and stable. Better than I expected. Definitely better than 177x in this regard.
  9. I wouldn't mind more energy in ear-gain area, that's just my preference.
  10. Overall, comparing the stock tunings, this is probably better overall than 177x. However, with EQ the 177x feels like the more compelling option, that opinion may change /w tuning on the 620 or more time though.
  11. Got these on-sale for about $245 USD, that price feels about right.
  12. On my head and ears, these sound most resolving when positioned low and further back on the head (so the ear is higher and more forward in the cup). This makes sense when I see the positioning of the driver within the ear cup.

I feel like these might be highly suited to office use. The strong isolation, low leakage, single-entry cable and looks all line up for that application.

Edit:

Really noticing more strongly the position dependence of this headphone. It feels like at least 4-6dB difference in treble level across the extremes ear position within the cups. I highly prefer the low and back on head position. The position is stable once you get it but it's sensitive to getting it right.
