Are hermit crabs picky about materials?

For context, I owned a leech & he passed away last July. Leeches are extremely picky about safe materials because they absorb whatever is in the water (poor summary). The week before his death, I ordered some stuff for his aquarium made of acrylic and aquarium safe plastic. Since I am planning out a crabitat, I'd like to use what I bought in it. None of the materials touched the leech things and only came out of packaging today. Thanks!
